Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake is a highly accomplished oral pathologist with expertise in clinical research, senior executive-level administration, and pedagogy, including educational methodology.
With an h-index of 102, derived from over 450 scientific publications and cited more than 30,500 times, he is recognized as a leading global authority on oral fungal diseases and related human mycoses. Additionally, he is among the top ten most cited scholars in the field of Dentistry.
Currently serving as a Professor Emeritus at the University of Hong Kong, he has previously held the position of Executive Dean at two major dental schools—The University of Hong Kong and The University of Queensland, Australia.
Under his leadership (2004–2013), the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong became one of the top five dental schools globally, as ranked by the QS World University Rankings from 2015 to 2022.

IDECA 2025 presents the latest technologies and raises questions
On May 16, the Central Asian International Dental Exhibition IDECA 2025 successfully finished at the Uzexpocenter in Tashkent.
The exhibition gathered more than 5,000 participants. Hundreds of brands from the global dental industry were represented at the stands of 50 exhibitors from 12 countries. IDEA is actively developing: compared to last year's version, the exhibition area has doubled, as well as the number of training events within the framework of the exhibition. Everyone also noted how much more representative the exhibition has become, presenting an exposition designed at the level of the world's leading dental exhibitions.
The general partner of the exhibition was DURR DENTAL (Germany). The strategic partner of the exhibition is KIUT International University (Tashkent).

The country's main dental exhibition showcased not only the latest innovations from the global industry but also hosted a forum with variety of master classes, educational modules, and discussions on relevant topics. Interestingly, one of these topics goes beyond dentistry. The organizer of the scientific program of the exhibition is Diamond Dental Education.
The honorary guest of the event, Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Hong Kong), presented a talk titled "Current Perspectives on Infection Prevention and Control in Dentistry." The issue at hand is how to protect healthcare professionals from infections that may be present in their patients and prevent the transmission of these infections to other patients, a concern that is becoming increasingly relevant. It is no secret that the types of various infectious diseases are not only increasing but also becoming more diverse. Therefore, approaches to infection control must be constantly reviewed and updated. For example, in Uzbekistan, chlorine-containing agents are used for disinfecting doctors' hands, surfaces, and instruments, which have been abandoned in many developed countries due to their harmful effects on human health and their destructive impact on instruments and surfaces.

As noted by Fazliddin Sadikov, the head of BIOSTOM and the director of the "IDECA" project, discussions on important issues for the development of domestic dentistry will not be limited to the exhibition. Given the immense interest from specialists, it is planned to continue discussions on relevant topics in the future, inviting responsible health officials from Uzbekistan and other interested parties.
The exhibition and forum included a comprehensive educational program, for which invitations to participate have been sent by the organizers to all relevant universities in the country. Students and working professionals were presented with the latest methodologies in dentistry from esteemed experts.
Among the speakers was another honorary guest of the exhibition, Dr. Simona Schick from Heidelberg University in Germany, as well as experts from Uzbekistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Georgia, and other countries.
Modern clinics typically have good equipment, including 3D printers and intraoral scanners. The question is how to make fuller use of their capabilities. This requires continuously studying the best practices of colleagues. "IDECA" provides a great opportunity for this.

The exhibition was held for the second time and despite a large number of esteemed experts, all workshops for exhibition visitors are presented by the organizers free of charge. Additionally, presentations, discussions, and a training program with live demonstrations were held in various halls of the exhibition throughout all three days of its operation. Naturally, the most attention from visitors was focused on the booths of the exhibiting companies, where they showcased modern types of dental and diagnostic equipment, the latest developments in consumables, and tools from manufacturers from Germany, Russia, China, the USA, Switzerland, South Korea, and several other countries around the world.

According to the legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan foreign citizens and stateless persons can enter Uzbekistan or travel through its territory for transit on the basis of entrance visas only. Foreign citizens and stateless persons can get visas at the diplomatic representations and consular missions of the Republic of Uzbekistan abroad on the basis of the visa support (confirmation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan). Visa support is issued on the basis of application of the inviting organization, company and persons who are permanently or temporarily residing in Uzbekistan and submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Foreign citizens and stateless persons arriving from the countries where there is no diplomatic representation or consular mission of the Republic of Uzbekistan can get visas upon arrival at the Visa Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the Tashkent International Airport. In this case the inviting physical or juridical person in Uzbekistan must apply in advance to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan in due order, get visa confirmation (stamp) of the Visa Division of the Consular Department and forward it to the invited person. This confirmation should be shown by invited person while buying an air-ticket and passing through passport control and the visa shall be issued on its basis on arrival at the Visa Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the Tashkent International Airport.
For processing and issuing visas, the legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan provides for consular fees.
VISA REGULATIONS FOR SOME COUNTRIES
1. A bilateral visa-free regime has been established with Kyrgyzstan (up to 60 days), Tajikistan (up to 30 days), Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
2. A visa-free regime is introduced for 30 days period for citizens of Andorra Principality, Australian Union, Austrian Republic, Argentine Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei Darussalam State, Canada, Czech Republic, Federative Republic of Brazil, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland Republic, French Republic, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Hungary, Greek Republic, Israel, Indonesia, Ireland, Iceland, Italian Republic, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Principality of Monaco, the Kingdom of Belgium, the Kingdom of Denmark, the Kingdom of Spain, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Kingdom of Norway, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Lithuania, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Portugal Republic, Republic of Bulgaria, Republic of Cyprus, Republic of Korea, Republic of Malta, Republic of Poland, Republic of San Marino, Republic of Serbia, Singapore, Republic of Slovenia, Republic of Croatia, Republic of Chile, Romania, Slovak Republic, Republic of Turkey, Swiss Confederation, Republic of Estonia, Japan, UUU, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
3. The visa-free regime applies to citizens of these countries, holders of all categories of passports (diplomatic, service and civil) planning to visit the Republic of Uzbekistan for up to 30 days, regardless of the purpose of their trip. In order to enter the country, a person must have a valid national passport or another substitute document used for travel to foreign countries. The visa-free regime does not apply to stateless persons permanently residing in the territories of these countries. Accordingly, the visa-free regime is valid for 30 days from the date of entry into Uzbekistan. Before the end of the 30-day visa-free stay period, a foreign citizen must leave the Republic of Uzbekistan. Exceeding the 30-day visa-free stay is recognized as violation of the Rules of stay of foreign citizens in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Accordingly, if it is necessary to stay in Uzbekistan for more than 30 days, a foreign citizen must obtain an entry visa to the Republic of Uzbekistan in accordance with the established procedure, corresponding to the purpose of his trip.
4.
